Git, GitHub and “Mastering Git” videos

I have always heard good things about Git, how its solves a lot of problem other version control system have along with being very fast. Sadly, at my past jobs, we only used SVN and never really had good workflow as the developers would all work on separate projects. I started looking into Git on and off, it’s hard to fully learn something you know that you are not going to be able to use in your group.

My Top Postings of 2010

Well, now that 2010 is over I would like to go back and look at my top 3 postings based on Google Analytics. I’m really not much of a writer as I’m sure you can tell from my postings, but I do want to be able to share whatever knowledge I have and I do hope this blog helps with that. I would love to hear from people that pop on to the site from a search and found some helpful info.

Sydney and Back Home

Well, I’ve been back to the states for a bit now just hadn’t had time to sit down and write a posting. For the last part of the trip we stayed in Sydney for 3 days, mostly with the idea of we were kind of in the area so why not stop by. The flight from New Zealand to Sydney wasn’t bad at all, very smooth and fast. Air New Zealand is a great airline and would easily fly them again.

Queenstown

As I said in my last posting, Queenstown is filled with astonishing views. There is mountains in every direction and at the time we came they still had snow on top of the peaks giving them a nice white top. The hotel we stayed out was right in the heart of the town with about a 5 min walk to the shore line. There are tons of bars and restaurants around.

Out of Auckland and to Queenstown

So, I have been a bit behind on my blogging as I have been in Queenstown for a bit now, the reason for this is a mixture of being very tired and just heading to bed or being sick from a migraine, but tonight I had some free time and I hope I can catch up. For our last day in Auckland Sarah and I just walked around to get a feel for the city.

Beyond Auckland

The other day Sarah and I had a guided tour to places outside of Auckland, like the Waitomo caves (also known as the glow worm caves) and Rotorua hot springs along with some stops along the way. After leaving the city for a 3 hour drive you really get the feeling that there is TON of open land in NZ. Along the way we seen tons of sheep and cows so many that I now have a life time worth.

Around Auckland

So after settling in, Sarah and I had a nice relaxing day around the city. We ordered rooms service for breakfast, (because we can!) and both have a very delicious eggs Benedict. (Eating them so fast that I didn’t get a photo). After eating I went to get my hair cut from a place right down the street. It was nice talking to an native New Zealander about New Zealand though at one point he started talking about his hobby with American cars.

Made it to Auckland

Well Sarah and I made it to Auckland, longest flight ever from LAX to Auckland international! The flight itself was alright. At this point I wouldn’t recommend United Air to anyone as they over booked the flight and Sarah didn’t have a seat. After asking people to give up their seat for $400 credit and a hotel in Boston, Sarah had a seat given to her but on the other end of the plane.

Books to read on my flight

So looking over the times for my flight it seems that it takes about 22 hours to get to New Zealand from Boston and about the same to get back from Australia. 22 hours is a long time to be in one place….Well, not really one place, but sitting. So thanks to the great site, http://www.thriftebook.com I been loading up on ebooks to read on the trip. The 2 books I’m really looking forward to reading are Groovy in Action and Grails in Action both from Manning Publications Co.

More Working Music - Zoë Keating

Zoë Keating is an cellist, I would say along the lines of Apocalyptica but more classical, softer and easier to listen to when trying to work. I find her music very soothing and it lets me clear my mind to work out problems. I stumbled on her music from someone’s Twitter posting, after listening to a video Wired made of her playing I went looking on Amazon MP3 to see what I could find.
